When the plant releases its chemical signal Geocoris insects (bottom, left) come to the rescue
Plants can summon insects to their aid to avoid being munched to death by caterpillars, scientists have found.
Leafy tobacco plants have evolved a "chemical SOS" that attracts predatory insects that eat the attackers.
In the journal Science, researchers revealed that the caterpillars' saliva activates this signal.
The modified signal causes Geocoris insects, which feed on the caterpillar larvae and eggs, to swoop in - rescuing the plant and gaining a meal.
The work was carried out by Silke Allmann of the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Ian Baldwin of the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Germany.
They discovered that when the plants were attacked by tobacco hornworm caterpillars, Manduca sexta, the caterpillar saliva caused a chemical change in "green leaf volatiles" - pungent chemicals that the plants produce. The familiar smell of cut grass is generated by green leaf volatiles (GLVs).
The scientists studied the effect further by setting up a fake plant attack.
They glued caterpillar eggs onto two groups of tobacco plants, using cotton swabs to coat the eggs on one group of plants with the plant's own GLVs. The eggs on the other plants were treated with GLV mixed with caterpillar spit.
The insects respond to the plants' SOS and gain a freshly hatched meal
The plants "perfumed" with the plant chemical alone had only 8% of their eggs attacked, whereas plants perfumed with the plant and caterpillar-derived chemical mixture chemical lost almost a quarter of their eggs.
All of these missing eggs had been eaten by the Geocoris bugs, which were attracted by the chemicals.
The modified chemical seems to "betray the location of the feeding caterpillar", the researchers concluded in their paper.
"Why the larvae would produce such an apparently [disadvantageous chemical] in their saliva remains to be determined."

The Song of the Hunted Humpback Whale
By ANDREW C. REVKIN
Humpback female and calf. (Credit: OAR/National Undersea Research Program (NURP))
The clash between Japan and many Western nations over killing whales clicked up another notch last week. As Japanese whalers, claiming to operate under the mantle of science, steamed toward waters near Antarctica, one of the new species on their harvest list was the humpback — a whale whose eerie song became a platinum-selling recording and whose full-body breaches are a draw for whale watching fleets worldwide.
My story in the Week in Review section is accompanied by a song sample. Have a listen and also have a look at some remarkable footage of humpbacks, taken by a diving team covered last year by The Times.
Even though whale meat is unpopular in Japan, government officials and many Japanese have rallied around what the country insists is a scientific research program (with a meat-selling sideline), criticizing critics. The official line is that whales are no more intelligent or special than cows, their expanding numbers are depleting fisheries needed by humans, and any complaints about killing them are hypocritical and little more than cultural imperialism.
In essence, the argument goes, if the United States — including environmentalists like Ted Turner — can revere bison and eat them too, what’s the big deal about harpooning a thousand or so whales a year?
Many biologists and campaigners insist that whales are special, and humpbacks particularly so. In a lecture at Oxford University on Nov. 2, Roger Payne — arguably the scientist most responsible for elevating the whale (and particularly the humpback) to a special position in the Western imagination — warned that the expanding Japanese killings were only one part of a broader assault that could finally silence the seas:
“The visual presence of some animal like a whale is not all that will be missed when it is gone. I care more for the howl of the wolf than for his merely doglike look. And when the last howl of the last wolf has filled the night, has echoed and died out, something in all of us will pass with it into a kind of mute invisibility.
“And so it is with whales. There may come a time when, in some remote, moonlit ocean glade, deserted of humanity, the last call of a humpback whale will start, and spread out, and then vanish, until those who heard it last will only wonder if they heard it at all. And in this way each whale species will make its final exit until the blind continents, banked in their beds of silent ooze, and moving like slow clouds across the molten face of the earth, will no longer have whales to cheer them on, but will make their way in silence and alone.”
It is fine poetry. But it is in English, not Japanese. National pride and imperatives shaped by history still often dominate how any culture deals with another, and with other species.
So how do such culture clashes get resolved with ocean-roaming animals like whales?

(The 2006 figures for racial categories chosen by Hispanics in the US Census other than "white" or "some other race" are: "Two or more races" or multiracials, 3.9%; Black, 1.4%; American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.8%; Asian, 0.35%; Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 0.1%.)[13] Respondents in the "Some other race" category are officially reclassified as white by the Census Bureau in some official estimates of race. This means that more than 90% of all Hispanic or Latino Americans end up being counted as "white" in some statistics of the US Census (which would equal 41 million in 2006).[14] White Hispanics by National Origin, 2000 [11] Hispanic National OriginWhite population in groupAs a percentage of group Mexican9,870,43347.3 Puerto Rican1,605,04947.2 Cuban1,060,85485.0 Dominican180,85622.7 Central American735,87940.4 South American838,27059.6 "Spanish" and "Other Hispanic"2,534,78644.8 Mexican Americans compose the majority (64%) of all Hispanic or Latino Americans,[15] and similarly, White Mexican Americans compose the majority (59% in 2000) of all White Hispanic or Latino Americans.[11] The second largest number of Hispanics identifying themselves as white are Puerto Rican Americans, and Cuban Americans are the third largest; these three U.S Hispanic groups by national origin compose the overwhelming majority of Hispanic and Latino Americans who self-identified as "white" in the 2000 US census.[11] Some Hispanic or Latino American groups, most notably Mexican Americans, have white majorities or pluralities, in contrast to the actual ethnographic profiles of their countries of origin.[citation needed] It is unknown how many of these are otherwise assimilated white Americans who happen to be a half or quarter Mexican (or whatever).

HEALTH RISKS OF DRINKING SODA

Health Risks of Drinking Soda
posted by Mel, selected from Caring.com Sep 21, 2009 7:02 am
At a picnic this weekend, I listened as an extended family member nagged at kids to stay away from the cola and other types of soda pop being served. “They rot your teeth,” one grandmother admonished her grandkids. But she herself was drinking a big glass of Diet Pepsi, and didn’t seem aware of the irony of her pronouncement: It’s actually older women who are most at risk of health problems from drinking cola and other fizzy soft drinks.
Every six months or so, it seems, a new warning comes out about the dangers of drinking too much soda. And you may feel you’ve heard it all. But a couple of new studies have led experts to begin calling for a public health campaign to warn women about cola consumption.
Women are at greater risk of osteoporosis, or bone thinning, as they get older. Most of us already know that. But many people don’t realize that drinking a lot of cola and other soft drinks increases osteoporosis risk — or causes the disease to progress faster. The phosphoric acid that makes fizzy drinks fizz actually eats away at bone, making it more porous.
This news, while worrying, has been known for a while. But now scientists are sounding the alarm that soft drinks weaken muscles as well as bones. According to a new study, drinking large amounts of cola (the study focused on people who drank two quarts or more a day) causes potassium levels in the blood to fall, which can lead to a severe deficiency. And potassium deficiency, as athletes know, makes you feel weak and dizzy, and causes muscles to atrophy.
Researchers aren’t sure yet exactly how soft drinks are causing the potassium deficiency; they theorize that flooding the kidneys with caffeine and sugar causes them to filter out too much potassium from cells. This is a dangerous double whammy for older women, who have a higher risk of falling and hip fracture than men do.
Of course, the real message health and nutrition experts are trying to convey is that we need more calcium and other bone- and muscle-building nutrients in our bodies, and fewer empty calories.
So what to do when soda’s out but you’re thirsty and milk just won’t cut it? Try water, lemonade, or iced tea.

Thomas Nozkowski
All 60 paintings by Nozkowski (born 1944) on display are the same size (small), untitled (but coded with a number), abstract, and have been created since 1980. And yet, the American painter says every one of them is based on a definite moment he’s experienced. Indeed, a closer look at the paintings reveals ‘‘pentimenti, abrasions and scarifications’’ that matched the flux of the artist’s emotions. It’s up to the viewer to provide his own interpretation. For its 25th anniversary, the foundation is unveiling treasures held by Swiss citizens, whose collections of European and American painting and sculpture were fortunate to have survived World War II. While many major artists are only represented by a single painting here, it is not surprising that Swiss artists — like Hodler, Vallotton and Giacometti — should have several works in the display. In the end, the show covers most of the aesthetic concepts that make up the fabric of early 20th-century art history. Left, René Magritte's "La ruse symétrique, 1928" (Private collection).

Strong Meteor Shower Expected Tonight
Robert Roy Britt Editorial Director SPACE.com Robert Roy Britt editorial Director space.com – Tue Aug 11, 9:19 am ET
The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show this week for those willing to get up in the wee hours of the morning and wait patiently for the shooting stars.
In North America, the best time to watch will be between midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, but late Tuesday night and also Wednesday night could prove fruitful, weather permitting.
The Perseids are always reliable, and sometimes rather spectacular. The only things that puts a damper on the August show are bad weather or bright moonlight. Unfortunately this week, as the Perseids reach their peak Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the moon will be high in the sky, outshining the fainter meteors.
Still, skywatchers around the globe will have a good chance of spotting the brighter meteors. Some already are enjoying the show.
Already underway
The Perseids are bits of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has laid down several streams of debris, each in a slightly different location, over the centuries as it orbits the sun. Every August, Earth passes through these debris streams, which spread out over time.
"They are typically fast, bright and occasionally leave persistent trains," says Joe Rao, SPACE.com's Skywatching Columnist. "And every once in a while, a Perseid fireball will blaze forth, bright enough to be quite spectacular and more than capable to attract attention even in bright moonlight."
Low numbers of Perseids, including some bright fireballs, have already been reported as Earth began entering the stream in late July. Seasoned observers have counted up to 25 per hour already, or nearly one every two minutes.
Most meteors are no bigger than a pea. They vaporize as they enter Earth's atmosphere, creating bright streaks across the sky.
The Perseids appear to emanate from the constellation Perseus, which rises high in the sky around midnight and is nearly overhead by dawn. Like most meteor showers, the hours between midnight and daybreak are typically the best time to watch, because that's when the side of Earth you are on is rotating into the direction of Earth's travels through space, so meteors are "scooped up" by the atmosphere at higher rates, much like a car's windshield ends the lives of more bugs than does the rear bumper.
Astronomers expect up to 200 meteors per hour in short bursts of up to 15 minutes or so. But many of the fainter meteors will simply not be visible due to moonlight, and rates will go down even more for those in urban areas. More likely a typical observer under reasonably dark skies might hope to see a meteor every couple minutes when the bursts come, and fewer during lulls.
When to watch
The best time to watch is between midnight and dawn Wednesday. Forecasters say the best stretch could come between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. ET (1-2 a.m. PT), which would be after daybreak in Europe. Some Perseids might be visible late Tuesday night, and Wednesday night into Thursday morning could prove worthwhile, too.
Meteor forecasting is still in its infancy, however, so the best bet for anyone truly hungry to spot shooting stars is to get in as much observing time as possible from around 11 p.m. Tuesday night until dawn Wednesday, and if you miss that show, try the same time frame Wednesday evening into Thursday morning.
Meteors should be visible in the pre-dawn hours, weather permitting, all around the Northern Hemisphere.
"Earth passes through the densest part of the debris stream sometime on Aug. 12," said Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "Then, you could see dozens of meteors per hour."
Viewing tips
The best location is far from city and suburban lights. Ideally, find a structure, mountain or tree to block the moon. Then scan as much of the sky as possible. The meteors can appear anywhere, heading in any direction. If you trace their paths backward, they'll all point to the constellation Perseus.
People in locations where any chill might occur should dress warmer than they think necessary to allow for prolonged viewing.
Seasoned skywatchers advise using a blanket or lounge chair for comfort, so you can lie back and look up for long periods. Allow at least 15 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the darkness. Then expect meteors to be sporadic: You might see two in a row, or several minutes could go by between shooting stars.
Avid meteor watchers might want to try scanning the northeastern horizon from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time (your local time, wherever you are) for Perseids that graze the horizon.
"Earthgrazers are meteors that approach from the horizon and skim the atmosphere overhead like a stone skipping across the surface of a pond," Cooke explained. "They are long, slow and colorful – among the most beautiful of meteors." He notes that an hour of watching may net only a few of these at most, but seeing even one can make the whole night worthwhile.

Medical Marijuana, Inc. Signs Agreements With Additional Collectives in Northern California; Invites City of Oakland to Learn About Company's Cost-Effective Tax Collection System
- Press Release
- Source: Medical Marijuana, Inc.
- On Tuesday August 11, 2009, 4:20 am EDT
MARINA DEL REY, CA--(Marketwire - 08/11/09) - Medical Marijuana, Inc. (Pinksheets:MJNA - News) announced today that MOU agreements are now in place with an additional four medical marijuana collectives from different counties in the Northern California region. All four collectives have signed on to implement MJNA's Stored Value Platform System in their respective businesses.

The Stored Value Platform System, a Point-of-Sale system, is a hallmark element of Medical Marijuana's business solutions package. This stored value-based system, once in place, helps businesses that are dispensing medical marijuana more efficiently and securely manage the tasks of revenue and taxation collection. The ease of access to certifiably secure transactions lessens the risk of loss at each level. Both provider and patient benefit greatly from this revolutionary program designed by MJNA.
The addition of collectives within the top half of the Golden State is also important to Medical Marijuana, Inc. as part of its effort to persuade at least one major Bay Area municipality to join in discussions with the Company regarding its automated tax collection solutions.
Per a special July 2009 election, the City of Oakland, CA, will become the first U.S. city to tax proceeds on the sale of medical marijuana. Approximately 80 percent of voters residing within city limits chose to support the initiative, which was adopted by many of the city's medical marijuana collectives and the Oakland City Council as part of the solution to Oakland's longstanding budget shortfall.
By employing Medical Marijuana's tax collection system, the City of Oakland could cost-effectively implement the necessary infrastructure to collect on every sale made within city limits by licensed collectives and collect those taxes on a daily basis. The POS system automatically recognizes the collective's tax ID number, state and local tax rates and then provides Automated Clearing House settlement of the taxes and routes the amount to the City's appointed financial institution. Taxes can be collected on a daily basis, providing an economic windfall for the city of Oakland and any other municipality recognizing the advantages of this model.
Tax Collection
The Stored Value Platform System will provide verifiable solutions to manage the difficult task of revenue and taxation collection. The "Point of Sale" (POS) system will recognize the dispensary's tax ID number, state and local tax rates and then provide "Automated Clearing House" (ACH) settlement of the taxes to the proper financial institutions. The customers of the dispensary are issued a plastic debit card or medical revenue card. The ease of access to certifiably secure transactions lessens the risk of loss at each level of the transaction.
Internal Management
All collectives/dispensaries in the U.S. are cash businesses. This presents a number of challenges. Dispensary owners risk employee theft and possible competition for sales with unsupervised employees. Our stored value card also eliminates the risks of carrying cash. For the investor looking to open more than one dispensary, this card allows him the ease of mind of knowing all transactions are accounted for in all of his locations.

ABOUT MEDICAL MARIJUANA, INC.
Medical Marijuana, Inc. is the first public company to recognize the vast and unequaled opportunities that exist in the rapidly expanding medical marijuana industry. The scientific recognition of marijuana as a powerful medicine, and as an effective, non-narcotic pain reliever, has brought legalized marijuana use to the forefront of mainstream discussion thus opening the door for safe and lucrative investment opportunities.
Medical Marijuana, Inc. has developed a suite of turnkey business and management solutions for the fledgling medical marijuana collective industry in California. The growing number of other states that have legalized the use of medical marijuana have yet to establish a system for the legalized commercial production and sale of the medicine. These regions are also strong potential targets for Medical Marijuana, Inc.'s products and services down the road. It is likely that other states will follow California's basic lead as the Golden State more specifically defines the regulations and protocol that are shaping the supply-side of the legal medical marijuana sector.

Dogs Sniffing Out Health Problems
By Tara Parker-Pope
Peter DaSilva for The New York Times Dogs like Kobi, a yellow Labrador, have participated in cancer detection studies.
Catching up on my weekend Web reading, I came across an interesting video from National Geographic, about dogs who sniff out cancer and health problems associated with diabetes.
One of the dogs featured, a collie named Tinker, began whining and barking when his owner, who has diabetes, experienced dangerous drops in blood sugar. Although Tinker wasn’t trained at first, his reactions to the hypoglycemic attacks led to further training as a qualified “hypo alert” dog. The video also features the work of the British research center, Cancer and Bio-Detection Dogs.
The center has 17 rescue dogs at various stages of training that will be paired up with diabetic owners, including many children, reports Reuters.
Last year, researchers from Queen’s University in Belfast decided to investigate anecdotal reports from dog owners who said their pets warned them of hypoglycemic attacks. They surveyed 212 dog owners, all of whom had Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disorder that prevents the body from producing insulin. A regular concern with Type 1 is that blood sugar will drop precipitously low, causing a person to fall unconscious.
Among the dog owners, 138, or 65 percent, said their dog had shown a behavioral reaction to at least one of their hypoglycemic episodes. About a third of the animals had reacted to 11 or more events, with 31.9 percent of animals reacting to 11 or more events. The dogs got their owners’ attention by barking and whining, (61.5 percent), licking (49.2 percent), nuzzling (40.6 percent), jumping on top of them (30.4 percent), and/or staring intently at their faces (41.3 percent). A small percentage of the dogs reportedly tremble in fear at the time of a hypoglycemic attack.

Allioli, the Catalan Accompaniment
By Edward Schneider
Matt Rourke/Associated Press
Ed’s approach to allioli is the same as mine - use a blender. The one time a tried a mortar and pestle I nearly passed out. - MB
The typical accompaniment to a rice dish cooked in a paella is allioli. This is not to be confused with its French near-homonym, aïoli, which is basically garlicked mayonnaise. The Catalan allioli is garlic and oil and salt – no egg yolk except when there is – crushed and stirred in a mortar until a fragile emulsion is formed. It is more akin to a Cuban mojo than to anything French, but it doesn’t contain citrus juice.
Many of the Spanish/Catalan rice dishes I’ve been tinkering with have been full of pork fat and the spices that go into sausages of various kinds and have been so in-your-face flavorful that I haven’t thought to remind you that a bowl of allioli is a nice thing to have to hand. The other day, however, I needed to make a purely vegetarian rice – artichokes, green beans, young fennel, onions, peppers – and found that allioli was no longer optional: even with a nice sofrito and a tasty vegetable stock, the dish needed an extra jolt.
I’m generally ready for laborious manual kitchen tasks – knife-chopping meat; shelling peas; whisking mayonnaise; shredding flank steak to make ropa vieja: sign me up. But mortars and pestles are just not my style. So I put three big, juicy, oily cloves of this season’s garlic into a container along with half a cup of olive oil and a big pinch of salt, and I obliterated this with an immersion blender, forming an emulsion that lasted longer than the eight nanoseconds that a mortar-and-pestle alloli tends to hold, at least when I try to make it.
This, Jackie and I and our guests drizzled over our no-pork-fat “paella,” to great effect.
Epilogue: There was some left over, and the next night we spooned it onto the taken-out remains of an imperfect pizza we couldn’t or wouldn’t finish in an East Village restaurant a few nights earlier. I won’t say that the allioli turned it into the best reheated pizza we’d ever tasted, but it certainly moved it up a point and a half on a zero-to-ten scale. I could also see it drizzled over lots of other things too: grilled meat or fish; roasted vegetables. Just about anything not involving caramel sauce and whipped cream, in fact.

Post-trauma stress lingers in NYC 9/11 survivors
By DEEPTI HAJELA, Associated Press Writer Deepti Hajela, Associated Press Writer – Tue Aug 4, 5:32 pm ET
NEW YORK – People who were heavily exposed to the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center had elevated risks of developing post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms even five years later, about four times that of the general public, according to a study released Tuesday.
The study by the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene found elevated levels of PTSD symptoms among the more than 46,000 people who were surveyed in 2006-2007. The study is based on data from a public health registry that tracks the health effects of Sept. 11.
Among survey respondents, 19 percent reported having symptoms, about four times the rate usually seen among adults. When the registry first surveyed people in 2003-2004, it was 14 percent.
Some in the first survey got better, while some remained where they were, and others got worse, said Lorna Thorpe, deputy commissioner for epidemiology and a co-author of the study.
"This is really the largest burden in terms of health conditions," Thorpe said.
The study found that more than half of the participants who reported having stress symptoms said they had not obtained treatment in the past year. The registry has begun outreach to get survey respondents referred for medical help, and the city offers free physical and mental health care to eligible people affected by the attacks.
Passers-by such as commuters and tourists were the most heavily affected, with 23 percent of them reporting symptoms in the latest survey.
The study contained better news about asthma. While those who developed respiratory symptoms soon after the attacks were still being diagnosed with asthma some years later, rates among people who first showed symptoms after 2003 were consistent with normal asthma rates.
"What this study shows fairly thoroughly, there was a very strong association between the intense exposure" on Sept. 11 and the days immediately following, in terms of developing asthma, Thorpe said. "There were lingering effects, but those lingering effects have ameliorated."
While asthma cases rose most sharply right after attacks, they were still being diagnosed after some years had passed. The study found that 10 percent of participants had been newly diagnosed with the condition between the attacks and the 2006-2007 survey period.
Rescue and recovery workers had the highest rates of new asthma diagnoses, and their risk was even higher if they were at the World Trade Center site on 9/11 itself or worked there for longer than 90 days. People who had to deal with heavy layers of dust in their homes or offices also had a higher risk of developing asthma.
The World Trade Center Health Registry was established in 2003 to track the long-term health effects of ground zero exposure on workers, volunteers, and residents. More than 71,000 people registered, and surveys on their health status was collected in 2003-2004 and 2006-2007. More than 46,000 registrants took part in both surveys.
The study was conducted by the health department and the federal Centers for Disease Control and was released in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

NEW HIV STRAIN FOUND

New HIV strain discovered in woman from Cameroon
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer Randolph E. Schmid, Ap Science Writer – Sun Aug 2, 2:31 pm ET
WASHINGTON – A new strain of the virus that causes AIDS has been discovered in a woman from the African nation of Cameroon. It differs from the three known strains of human immunodeficiency virus and appears to be closely related to a form of simian virus recently discovered in wild gorillas, researchers report in Monday's edition of the journal Nature Medicine.
The finding "highlights the continuing need to watch closely for the emergence for new HIV variants, particularly in western central Africa," said the researchers, led by Jean-Christophe Plantier of the University of Rouen, France.
The three previously known HIV strains are related to the simian virus that occurs in chimpanzees.
The most likely explanation for the new find is gorilla-to-human transmission, Plantier's team said. But they added they cannot rule out the possibility that the new strain started in chimpanzees and moved into gorillas and then humans, or moved directly from chimpanzees to both gorillas and humans.
The 62-year-old patient tested positive for HIV in 2004, shortly after moving to Paris from Cameroon, according to the researchers. She had lived near Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, but said she had no contact with apes or bush meat, a name often given to meat from wild animals in tropical countries.
The woman currently shows no signs of AIDS and remains untreated, though she still carries the virus, the researchers said.
How widespread this strain is remains to be determined. Researchers said it could be circulating unnoticed in Cameroon or elsewhere. The virus' rapid replication indicates that it is adapted to human cells, the researchers reported.
Their research was supported by the French Health Watch Institute, the French National Agency for Research on AIDS and Viral Hepatitis and Rouen University Hospital.
A separate paper, also in Nature Medicine, reports that people with genital herpes remain at increased risk of HIV infection even after the herpes sores have healed and the skin appears normal.
Researchers led by Drs. Lawrence Corey and Jia Zhu of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that long after the areas where the herpes sores existed seem to be clear, they still have immune-cell activity that can encourage HIV infection.
Herpes is marked by recurring outbreaks and has been associated with higher rates of infection with HIV. It had been thought that the breaks in the skin were the reason for higher HIV rates, but a study last year found that treatment of herpes with drugs did not reduce the HIV risk.
The researchers tested the skin of herpes patients for several weeks after their sores had healed and found that, compared with other genital skin, from twice to 37 times more immune cells remained at the locations where the sores had been.
HIV targets immune cells and in laboratory tests the virus reproduced three to five times faster in tissue from the healed sites as in tissue from other areas.
"Understanding that even treated (herpes) infections provide a cellular environment conducive to HIV infection suggests new directions for HIV prevention research," commented Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.
That study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Tietze Foundation.

AIG--LETTER TO REPRESENTATIVE JERROLD NADLER

on Tue 14 Jul 2009 09:59 AM EDT
last year when the recession became apparent and AIG WENT DOWN TO ,39 CENTS, I begun buying AIG stock, with the idea of(buylow ,sell high), then Aig issued a reverse stock split of 20-1,on the date of the notice to the public, the chairman of AIG issue a press conference about his possible successor, that buried the stock plit in the news,it was premidetated action to decieve, the point is my 14000 shares were diluted to 629 shares at $ 20.00(cutting me off from future capitalization),at the time the stock was $1.46 per share,my shares were worth $20200.00 after the split they were worth $ 11,000.00-today they are worth 9,900.00, so i lost more than 10,000.00 on the switch, but worse of all, i lost the difference between $1.46 and $20.00= $235000.00 and of course with 629 shares it is imposible to benefit if AIG ever returns to the old price of $90.00--629 shares times $90.00=$56610.00 while 13836 shares at $ 90.00=$ 1245000.00 in effect by changing the rules arbitrarily in mid game, they impoverish me ,rob me of my retirement and left me destitute, when i was following the investment rules to the letter. AIG should be disbanded they are a pack of thieves shielding themselves with the goverment, first they rob all the minoroties and everybody else with the sub-prime loans, which were targeted to the minorities, then sold around the world, willy neelly, now they turned their attention to the small investors ,like me, i am 72 years opf age,so effectively i lost my retirement, through no fault of my own, while following the capitalist way, only to find out that they are all robbers, cheaters and thieves worthy of the worst corrupt 3rd world country, while pretending to be an enlighted society, the goverment is in bed with these crooks and they feel they are inmune ,since supposedle they are too big to fall!!! well ,they should fall!!! i need justice!!!! and to think i could have been killed in vietnam war defending these pack of robbers, traitors, double crossers, but the worst is to see how deep is the goverment behind these scum!!!

'LETTERS TO REID STOWE WHILE AT 1000 DAYS AT SEA"
by
salvador rosillo
on Sun 12 Jul 2009 05:34 PM EDT
July 12, 2009 Day 811 Running Back Stay Blocks Wind S, 30 to 5 knots, Course NW, Speed 3 to .5 knots, Position, 9*22n by 17*36w
For over 40 days since I dropped the main sail and jib we have been maneuvering in the widest area of the East Equatorial Doldrums. We have stayed out of shipping lanes, filled our water tanks with fresh water and caught plenty of fish for fresh food. Slowing down even more and enjoying and observing the sea and nature has been a soulful experience. Putting ourselves at the mercy of the winds and currents, I was not sure exactly where we would go or what we would experience. I had some guidelines I wanted to stay with in and though we may appear close to the coast, it is still wide open empty ocean and the winds and currents on the pilot charts show that the dominant forces take us further offshore…In the meantime life goes on here on the Love Boat with its regular routine. I still work every day as I have for years and years. In the future some people may find a way to go to sea for 100's of days and not have to work so hard, but it has eluded me. My hands, wrists and fore arms have become very sore and tuff like the steel tools and ropes I manipulate. A lot of determination, prayer and self healing has made it possible for me to go on happily…Mung beans are the only sprouts that are still sprouting for me and only about half geminate. My day begins with a sprout separation and rinsing. I find it very healing to move my hands through the growing greens to separate the good from the bad. I have to be very gentle not to break the soft white shoots. If I break one, I nibble it and it tastes like the drop of juice on the stem of freshly pulled grass. I savor the green energy and enjoy the life force the sprouts give me… Both of the running back stay blocks seized up during the 40 days rest I gave them. It takes quite a few tools to get them apart, cleaned up, oiled and back together again. The pilot house floor between the two tool boxes is a good place to work… The squalls keep coming day and night, often with a lot of wind… I can still see the Southern Cross and the Big Dipper in the northern sky, but there have been too many clouds for me to see the North star.

LETTER TO BRAD SPENCER
by
salvador rosillo
on Sun 28 Jun 2009 06:39 PM EDT
THE CENSUS BUREAU CLASSIFICATIONS ARE CALLING PEOPLE AFRICAN-AMERICAN IMPLICIT BLACK, WHEN IN REALITY NORTH AFRICA IS CLASSIFIED WHITE INCLUDING EGYPT THAT IS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN SUB-SAHARA THERE ARE MILLIONS OF NATIVE WHITE PAOPLE SO THIS DOCTOR CANDIDATE FROM MOZAMBIQUE ENROLLED IN MED SCHOOL SOMEWHERE IN THE MID WEST WHEN ASKED ABOUT HIS ORIGINS HE ANSWERED WHITE-AFRICAN AND IT WAS NOT ACCEPTED SO HE IS IN COURT AND ON TV TELLING HIS STORY POINT IS OBAMA WITHOUT HIS MOTHER'S BACKGROUND AND INTELLIGENCE HE WOULD NOT BE WHERE HE IS NOW! HE LIVED WITH HIS WHITE GRANDPARENTS MOST OF HIS LIFE WAS MOLDED BY THEM, YET HE REFERES TO HIS MOM AS MY SINGLE MOTHER WHEN SHE WAS TWICE DIVORCED WE MUST REFORM THE CENSUS BUREAU CLASSIFICATION CATEGORIES IT IS A TOOL FOR OPPRESSION WHO EVER RUNS IT I PROPOSE DNA ANALYSIS AS A CLASSIFICATION OBAMA BELONGS TO A TRIBE CALLED LUO HE IS A TRIBEMEN IN THAT RESPECT
ABOVE AFRICAN SINCE THE TERM AFRICAN AS WE SEE IT NOW SHOULD INCLUDE WHITES AND ASIANS
ETC NOT AS JOHNNY COME LATELYS BUT AS EQUAL
YET DIFFERENT AFRICANS IT WAS MANDELA'S DREAM
WHICH HE ACTED UPON MAYBE THAT WAS WHY HE HAD TO SPENT SO MANY YEARS IN PRISON TO FORMULATE HIS PHILOSOPHY AND EXPOUNDED IN ACTION WHAT A GREAT MAN
OF WISDOM AND VISION IT TAKES A MAN TO FORGIVE ANYBODY CAN HATE!
BUT IN THE CASE OF THE HISPANIC DESIGNATION IT IS NOT THAT I DO NOT LIKE IT NO NOT AT ALL, THE QUESTION IS WE SHOULD COMPARE APPLES WITH APPLES ORANGES WITH ORANGES WHEN ONE USES THE TERM HISPANIC ONE MUST COMPARED IT TO ANGLO FOR INSTANCE TO GERMANIC ALSO TO GAELIC TO SEMITIC TO SLAVIC TO LATIN TO GALLIC TO LUSITANIAN ALL THOSE ARE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND THOSE WORDS DENOTE CERTAIN CULTURAL BACKGROUND AND GEOGRAPHICAL ORIGINS BUT SINCE WE ALL CAME FROM AFRICA WE SHOULD ALL BE CALLED AFRICANS THEN IT WILL START AGAIN WHITE AFRICANS BLACK AFRICANS RED AFRICANS YELLOW AFRICANS BLUE AFRICANS THEN IS OK TO USE HISPANIC BUT IF ONE USES HISPANIC TO COMPARE AGAINST BLACK WHITE ASIAN( USED TO BE YELLOW WHAT HAPPENED?? PACIFIC ISLANDER ESKIMO ( MAYBE THAT ONE IS OK) WELL IT IS WRONG IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE ONE IS APPLE THE OTHER ORANGE SO WE NEED TO CALL BLACKS BY THEIR POINT OF CULTURAL ORIGIN ALSO WHITES AND SPECIALLY ASIANS PLEASE ANSWER WHERE DOES ASIA BEGIN AND/OR END??? DO YOU MEAN THAT CHINESE HAN ARE TOGETHER WITH HINDUS? HA,HA,HA, NOT IN YOUR DREAMS EVERYONE HAS THOSE BACKGROUND STHE EASIEST WAY TO FIND OUT IS DNA NOT FAMILY FABLES OR POLITICAL NAMES DON'T YOU AGREE??? SAL

"MY mtDNA ANALYSIS"
by
salvador rosillo
on Tue 02 Jun 2009 01:26 PM EDT
salvador rosillo to Nieves show details 1:17 PM (2 minutes ago) Reply
the preliminary mtdna analysis that is the x chromosome passed from mother to daughter i carry it but cannot pass it you carry the y chromosome but cannot pass it only from father to son anyway her mtdna begun somewhere in the border region of present day sudan and egypt from there moved towards present day lybia wher it underwent a mutation from there it move towards
Malta and then on to
Greece soon to move to
Turkey from there it crossed the
Black Sea North by Northeast around
Georgia (strange coincidence Georgians call
themselves Iberians) there was the ancient kingdom of
Iberia on the far Easter shores of the
Black Sea a while back, that is . from there it went into present day
Russia making a arc eastwards but pointing it self towards Finland along the way it went trough different mutations so what does it all mean? well, for the moment i know that the X chromosome that i carry and cannot trans pass has travelled in the last
140,000+ years following such pathways spending most of the time in
Russia so we are according to the mtDNA
that mother passed on to us, is as Russian as it can get.... with the other accents mentioned below.. after i make a further analysis other stories will emerge one of them already has the found a man that 100 generations ago there is 95% possibility we shared an ancestor and 75% that 50 generations ago we also shared an ancestor his name is Jose Diaz pero no he hablado con el ,
aun....

"PARTITION" AND 911
by
salvador rosillo
on Thu 28 May 2009 08:03 AM EDT
Unbiased at least he was when he arrived on his mission,
Having never set eyes on the land he was called to partition
Between two peoples fanatically at odds,
With their different diets and incompatible gods.
"Time," they had briefed him in London, "is short. It's too late
For mutual reconciliation or rational debate:
The only solution now lies in separation.
The Viceroy thinks, as you will see from his letter,
That the less you are seen in his company the better,
So we've arranged to provide you with other accommodation.
We can give you four judges, two Moslem and two Hindu,
To consult with, but the final decision must rest with you."
Shut up in a lonely mansion, with police night and day
Patrolling the gardens to keep the assassins away,
He got down to work, to the task of settling the fate
Of millions. The maps at his disposal were out of date
And the Census Returns almost certainly incorrect,
But there was no time to check them, no time to inspect
Contested areas. The weather was frightfully hot,
And a bout of dysentery kept him constantly on the trot,
But in seven weeks it was done, the frontiers decided,
A continent for better or worse divided.
The next day he sailed for England, where he could quickly forget
The case, as a good lawyer must. Return he would not,
Afraid, as he told his Club, that he might get shot.

"BIO"
I BEGUN PAINTING WITH MY FINGERS AND
HANDS AT SUNDAY DAY SCHOOL AFTER A LONG HIATUS WHERE I HAD TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEMS OF
GROWING UP AND FINDING MY TRUE
SELF NOT THE SOCIALIZED
PERSONA WHICH I EVENTUALLY WAS
ABLE TO DISASSEMBLE AND
DISMEMBER I WAS ABLE TO BEGIN
AGAIN IN ERNEST AT THE AGE OF
28. I STUDIED ANTHROPOLOGY
AND CINEMA AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
1969-1979 SERVED AS A SENATOR FOR
THE SCHOOL OF ARTS 1975
-76 AND WAS THE EDITOR OF
THE SCHOOL'S
NEWSPAPER"THE OWL"
1972-73 MY TECHNIQUE IS CALLED "SUSPENSION OF
JUDGEMENT" AFTER THE INSTRUCTIONS FROM "DON JUAN" AND "CARLOS CASTANEDA" WHICH CALL FOR ACTION WITHOUT DOUBTS WITHOUT FEARS. THEMSELVES WERE NOT
ARTISTS BUT SHAMAN-WARRIORS SEEKERS OF FREEDOM
FROM THE PRACTICES AND
BELIEFS OF ORDINARY MEN I AM MOST OF ALL A
WARRIOR LOOKING FOR
IMPECCABILITY OF ACTION AND THOUGHT TO QUOTE CASTANEDA -FOR A WARRIOR, THE SPIRIT IS AN
ABSTRACT ONLY BECAUSE HE KNOWS
IT WITHOUT WORDS OR EVEN THOUGHTS. IT'S AN ABSTRACT BECAUSE HE CAN'T
CONCEIVE WHAT THE SPIRIT IS. YET, WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OR DESIRE TO UNDERSTAND IT, A WARRIOR HANDLES THE
SPIRIT. HE RECOGNIZES IT. BECKONS IT, ENTICES IT, BECOMES FAMILIAR WITH
IT, EXPRESSES IT WITH HIS
ACTS- SO, THAT IS MY TECHNIQUE OF
PAINTING AND LIVING, I BECKON THE SPIRIT TO
COME AND I PROVIDE MY HANDS , MY FINGERS AND WHOLE
BEING AS A CONDUIT FOR IT, TO SHOW UP ON THE
CANVAS FREELY , UNIMPEDED, RESTRICTED ONLY BY MY HUMAN CONDITION WITHOUT BELIEF SYSTEMS WITHOUT AESTHETIC
CONCERNS WITHOUT DOUBTS OR
FEARS, WITHOUT REGRETS IT COMES AND I GIVE IT
MY WHOLE TO PAINT, NOT BECAUSE IT IS
BETTER OR WORSE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, BUT, BECAUSE, IN THIS LIFETIME, PAINTING AND POETRY ARE MY CHOSEN PATHS , OR CONDUITS FOR THE SPIRIT TO
IMPECCABILY EXPRESS ITSELF THROUGH MY LIFE. I AM A WARRIOR-ARTIST!

TO REID STOWE
by

If We Must DieIf we must die, let it not be like hogs Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot, While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, Marking their mock at our accursed lot. If we must die, O let us nobly die, So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we defy Shall be constrained to honor us though dead! O kinsmen! We must meet the common foe! Though far outnumbered let us show us brave, And for their thousand blows deal one deathblow! What though before us lies the open grave? Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back! Claude McKay, 1889-1948
