The offshore wind farm at Horns Rev is the first large project in the Danish government's energy action plan "Energy 21" from 1997 for wind farms in offshore areas. The project forms part of the achievement of Energy 21's environmental goals and commissioning of the wind farm is scheduled for the end of year 2002.

The wind conditions on Horns Rev are so good that the future offshore wind turbines are expected to produce twice the amount as onshore wind turbines of the same size. The demonstration facility will have a power of 160 MW.

Eltra is responsible for establishment of the transformer platform as well as the cable connection transmitting the energy to the shore.
